Adani Group to Redevelop Dharavi Slums
The Adani Group, in collaboration with the Maharashtra government, is undertaking the ambitious task of redeveloping the Dharavi slums. This redevelopment project aims to provide improved living conditions for the residents of one of the largest slum clusters in Asia.
As part of the redevelopment plan, the Adani Group has announced that the new flats in Dharavi will come equipped with a kitchen and toilet. This is a significant improvement compared to the existing dwellings in the slums. The new flats will measure 350 square feet, which is 17 percent larger than what is typically offered in slum redevelopment projects. It is worth noting that the current houses in the informal settlements measure only 269 sq ft.
To determine eligible residents, January 1, 2000, has been set as the cut-off date. Those who meet the eligibility criteria will be offered the new flats as part of the redevelopment project. However, for those who are deemed ineligible, the state government has proposed an affordable rental housing policy to provide alternative accommodation.
The redevelopment project also includes the creation of community halls, recreational areas, public gardens, dispensaries, and daycare centers for children. These amenities will contribute to the overall improvement of the living conditions in the Dharavi area. The aim is to create a vibrant and inclusive community that caters to the needs of its residents.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government, operating as a special-purpose vehicle. In November 2022, the Adani Group secured the contract to rebuild the Dharavi slum clusters. With this project, the Adani Group aims to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the Dharavikars while preserving the essence of Dharavi.
The new flats will be more than just houses; they will be dream homes for the residents of Dharavi. The Adani Group is committed to upgrading the living conditions of the Dharavikars and ensuring that every home reflects the spirit of the community. The aspirations of the Dharavikars have always mirrored those of the common Mumbaikar, and this redevelopment project aims to bring those aspirations to life.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt. Ltd. (DRPPL) understands the importance of preserving the soul of Dharavi. While the physical structures may change, the essence of Dharavi, its vibrant culture, and the resilient spirit of its people will remain intact. The redevelopment project seeks to create a sustainable and inclusive community that promotes the well-being and progress of its residents.
The Adani Group and the Maharashtra government established the DRPPL, a Special Purpose Vehicle, last year with the intention of developing Dharavi and enhancing the lives of the people living there by giving them access to contemporary housing and encouraging their innate spirit of entrepreneurship. Rebuilding areas and redefining what it means to live in a community will be necessary to achieve this, as will integrating modern necessities like internet, electricity, water, and transportation connectivity with a clean environment and public amenities that are among the best in the business.
The DRPPL’s strategy is in line with best practices for comparable habitats used in Singapore and other developed countries. This project is reminiscent of the successful redevelopment of the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong, which was once the most densely populated place on earth. The area was turned into a park, demonstrating the potential of these kinds of redevelopment initiatives.
In conclusion, the Adani Group’s collaboration with the Maharashtra government for the redevelopment of the Dharavi slums is a significant step towards improving the living conditions of the Dharavikars. The provision of new flats with enhanced amenities, along with the creation of community spaces, reflects the commitment to uplift the community and create a better future for its residents. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project aims to transform the slums into a thriving and inclusive neighborhood while still honoring the spirit and essence of Dharavi.
