Mumbai-Harbour Link, India’s Longest Sea Bridge

At a public event held in Navi Mumbai, Prime Minister Modi oversaw the inauguration and laying of foundation stones for a range of critical projects. One of the most notable project inaugurations was for the underground road tunnel that connects the Eastern Freeway’s Orange Gate to Marine Drive. This tunnel spans a length of 9.2 kilometers and was constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 8,700 crore. It is a remarkable infrastructure development for the city of Mumbai, and its opening is expected to bring significant benefits to commuters and the local economy alike.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The bridge, spanning approximately 21.8 km, consists of six lanes, with around 16.5 km of its length over the sea and the remaining 5.5 km on land.

The construction of the Atal Setu aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of enhancing people’s ease of mobility by strengthening urban transport infrastructure and connectivity, as reported by the news agency PTI. The foundation stone for this ambitious project was laid by the Prime Minister in December 2016.

One of the key advantages of the Mumbai-Harbour Link is its ability to provide faster connectivity to both the Mumbai International Airport and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Additionally, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa, and South India. Furthermore, the bridge will enhance connectivity between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port, facilitating smoother transportation of goods and boosting trade.
